Grilled Halloumi

This traditional preparation may not be as well known as saganaki, but it is undoubtedly as delicious!

My husband and I first discovered grilled halloumi during our honeymoon in Greece and immediately fell in love with it. in fact, we searched for it on every menu!

To compliment its mild but salty and tangy flavor, we found that most restaurants in Greece serve grilled halloumi with a sweet accompaniment such as honey, grapes or fruit compote.

I’ve provided a simple appetizer recipe that pairs the cheese with local honey and white sesame seeds. But feel free to experiment with alternatives!

Recipe

Grilled Halloumi

Yields 4 - 8 Servings

Ingredients

  • 8 ounce package halloumi

  • Local honey, for garnish

  • White sesame seeds, for garnish

Method

Heat a grill pan over high heat.

Slice halloumi into thin, even slices. Spray both sides with canola, avocado or ghee spray.

Place the cheese in the center of the grill pan when hot. Leaving the cheese undisturbed, grill until dark brown char lines form, approximately 1 - 2 minutes. (Disturbing the cheese will result in less uniform, clean lines.) Flip the cheese and repeat this process on the other side.

Remove cheese from heat and arrange on a serving dish. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with white sesame seeds for garnish.

Serve immediately and enjoy!
